The Baby’s skin is very delicate and soft. Wetness for a long
time in the diaper area causes skin peeling at the inguinal region. Moreover, urine
contains ammonia which irritates the skin and causes ammoniacal dermatitis. Also
if you clean stools with rough cloth applying pressure, it causes friction
injury to the skin leading to redness and pain.
Prevention is always better than cure in case of
diaper rash as it is a very painful condition and affects a baby’s daily life
activities significantly.
Follow the below-mentioned tips for prevention and cure of
diaper rash:
Diaper use and especially if it is changed after 3-4 hours
leads to dampness in the diaper area for a long predisposing baby for dermatitis and
fungal infection. If at all diaper use becomes necessary when going out of home
and in the night to prevent frequent waking up then try to change the diaper as soon as
it becomes wet. As far as possible use diapers made from cotton cloth and
change it frequently.
Every time you change the wet soiled diaper, after cleaning the local area allow the skin to dry out. It decreases the chances of getting a fungal
infection.
It works as a barrier between skin and water and ammonia
present in urine and stools. Hence it will serve preventive as well as curative
purpose. Especially when a baby suffers from diarrhea, start taking preventive measures.
You can also apply coconut oil over the skin.
Many people have a habit of applying powder over the genital
and inguinal area. It should be avoided as powder particles can cause ovarian
cancer in girl children and respiratory issues due to inhalation of dust
particles.
If detergent is not washed off from diapers, it will make
diapers hard and will also cause chemical dermatitis. Hence always rinse
diapers 2-3 times in freshwater.
